Positions Available

I am currently looking for highly-qualified graduate and undergraduate researchers who are interested in water science & engineering research in my laboratory.  If you are interested, please contact me by email (kikehata@txstate.edu).

Our research projects are highly interdisciplinary.  Students from many different academic programs joined our group, including:

  • Civil engineering
  • Environmental engineering technology
  • Mechanical engineering technology
  • Chemistry and biochemistry
  • Biology and microbiology
  • Aquatic resources
  • Materials science & engineering

Be aware that I will not respond to those generic email inquiries which include a copied & pasted title of my recent publication without clear comprehension & familiarity of the subject matter.  Those emails will be simply ignored/deleted.  There is no need to send me reminders.

(Note: My office is located in Bruce and Gloria Ingram Hall (Room 5313). The 5th floor is restricted to authorized ID card holders.  Please make an appointment or call me at 512-245-0855 to arrange a meeting.  See Contact Us for more information.)

Minimum qualifications:

Undergraduate student researchers

  • Interested in & care about the future of our water supply and the environment
  • Interested in chemistry and/or biology
  • Likes field and/or lab works

Interested undergraduate students in the College of Science and Engineering at Texas State University are encourage to apply.

Graduate student researchers

  • Interested in & care about the future of our water supply and the environment
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental/civil/chemical engineering, biology, chemistry, biochemistry, environmental science, or equivalent
  • Experience in field and/or lab experiments
  • Interested in fun & challenging water science & engineering research projects

There are several different options for you to join my laboratory as a graduate student at Texas State University:

Please refer to the corresponding program website for more details.

Expectations:

Research and graduate schools are not 9-5 endeavors and very few students are successful putting in just a 40-hour work week.  You do whatever it takes to get the job done.  If you are worried about how many hours you’re putting in, then you are in the wrong lab.

In my laboratory, students are expected to work on their research all the time except for the time spent on their course works and instructional/teaching assistant duties, if any.  Your presence in the lab/office is expected.

Productivity

  • Undergraduate students are expected to co-author 1 or 2 peer-reviewed journal papers and/or 1 or 2 conference presentations.
  • Master’s students are expected to author 2 to 3 peer-reviewed journal papers as primary author and make 1 to 2 conference presentations.
  • PhD students are expected to author 4 to 6 peer-reviewed journal papers as primary author and make 2 to 3 conference presentations.

Students are expected to become subject-matter experts in the field of advanced water and wastewater treatment, sustainable water resources management, and/or aquatic biology/chemistry for water quality science and engineering.
